AI Integration

How to bring AI capabilities into a K–12 world language platform
02
Context

Three waves of AI

Wave 1 — 2022–2023
Generative AI
AI that creates. Text, images, summaries, translations — generated instantly on demand. ChatGPT moment.
Wave 2 — 2024–2025
Reasoning AI
AI that thinks. Analyzes problems, evaluates quality, makes multi-step decisions. Goes beyond output to judgment.
Wave 3 — Now
Agents
AI that works. Takes actions, completes tasks end-to-end. Jensen Huang (NVIDIA): "Agents literally do work."

Clayton Christensen: 'People don't buy products — they hire them to get a job done.'
AI agents are the ultimate expression of that idea.

03
The Spectrum

Three levels of AI in practice

Level 1 — Available Today
Individual AI Tools

Single-purpose capabilities — translation, rubric generation, quiz builder — run on demand. High control, easy to adopt.

One input → one output
Level 2 — Available Today
AI Workflows

Multiple tools chained into repeatable pipelines. Grade essay → generate feedback → post to LMS. Reusable templates teachers configure once.

Automates sequences of steps
Level 3 — Emerging
AI Agents

Systems that infer intent and act autonomously — generating workflows, adapting to context, completing tasks end-to-end.

Gets jobs done on its own

What I've Started at Wayside

Working on AI — two tracks at once

I've begun working on both of these simultaneously at Wayside — one focused on what we deliver to customers, the other on how our teams build it.
1
For the product (Levels 1 & 2)
Embedding AI tools and workflows directly into LearningSite — what students and teachers experience every day.
2
For the teams building it (Level 3)
Dev, product, and QA using state-of-the-art agents (e.g. Claude Code) to 2–5X velocity and quality — starting with dev, then expanding to product (upstream) and QA (downstream).
04
The Opportunity

Any web platform can become AI-powered

LearningSite is a content delivery platform with assignments and teacher tools — AI layers onto every part of that experience.
LearningSite Today
  • Rich curriculum: video, audio, and digital activities from Wayside's content library
  • Auto-grading for quizzes; writing and speaking assessments graded manually by teachers
  • No built-in translation — students rely on external tools for language support
  • IPA assessments and formative tasks, but no AI-assisted feedback on open-ended work
With AI Embedded
  • Students highlight any text → instant in-context translation or explanation
  • AI assists teachers with feedback on writing and speaking assessments, including IPA tasks
  • Teachers create questions, activities, and practice sets from any content in the library
  • Teacher configures AI tools once; repetitive grading and prep tasks are automated
No platform rebuild required — AI is added as a layer on top
05
The Platform

Intellia

A platform for creating, using, and embedding AI tools and workflows — inside Intellia or embedded directly in LearningSite.
Tools
  • Single AI capability with a defined prompt
  • Variables, output type (text or JSON)
  • No code required — wizard-based builder
  • Run on demand or triggered by user action
Projects
  • Multi-tool workflows chained in sequence
  • Attach reference files and instructions
  • Natural-language instructions guide the pipeline
  • Reusable and configurable per teacher

Both Tools and Projects embed into LearningSite — same model, same capabilities, no rebuild.

06
AI Tools

Create, run, and embed AI tools

Create — Building a Tool
  • Wizard-based builder — no code required
  • Define prompt with variables (e.g. {{selected_text}})
  • Choose output: free text or structured JSON
  • Set persona, tone, and model parameters
  • Test immediately from the run page
Run — Using in Intellia
  • Dedicated run page with input fields and live output
  • Structured JSON output for use in workflows
  • Session history to compare past runs
  • Request tracing for transparency
  • Eval system to test quality over time
Same tools embed directly in LearningSite — see next slide
07
Embedding

Three ways to embed tools in any product

01
Sidebar Panel
A collapsible panel where tools are added per course or page. Teachers configure which tools appear — students access them without leaving the content.
02
Text-Selection Tools
Select any text → tool runs automatically on the selection. Ideal for translation, explanation, or highlight-to-quiz in a world language context.
03
Manual Trigger / Dialog
A button opens a modal → user fills inputs → tool runs and returns results. Best for essay feedback, rubric generation, or richer teacher workflows.

All three patterns work in LearningSite today — added as a layer, no platform rebuild.

08
AI Projects

Multi-tool Workflows

Example: Essay Grading — Grade → Feedback → Deliver
1
Attach rubric file
Upload the grading rubric as a reference document — used as context for all runs of this project.
2
Chain: Rubric Generator → Essay Evaluator
First tool structures the rubric; second tool scores the essay against it. Output of one feeds the next.
3
Instructions describe grading logic
Natural-language instructions guide the pipeline: how to grade, what feedback to return, what tone to use.
4
Embed: "Process" button in LearningSite
Teacher clicks Process on a student submission → full pipeline runs → result appears inline. No context-switching.
09
Demo Walkthrough

IPA Grading — live demo

30 students write a paragraph in Spanish. 3–4 hours of grading → 30 minutes.
Act 1
Build IPA Scoring AI Tool
  • A teacher takes 6 minutes to score one submission — one by one, 30 times
  • This tool does it in 8 seconds using Wayside's own IPA rubric criteria
  • No code needed — built in minutes
Act 2
Embed IPA Scoring Tool in LearningSite
  • The scoring tool sits inside LearningSite in the background
  • As students submit writing, it automatically scores each one
  • Teacher opens her gradebook to find 30 scored submissions waiting — she reviews and approves
Act 3
Run IPA Grading Workflow
  • Goes further: scores and writes personalized, encouraging feedback for each student
  • Feedback is in the teacher's tone, ready to post
  • For a class of 30, that's 90 minutes back per assignment — configured once, runs automatically
10
Takeaway

AI at every layer of the stack

Tools
Single-purpose AI on demand. Translation, rubric generation, quiz builder — high control, available today.
Workflows
Multi-step pipelines that automate what teachers do manually. Configurable, reusable, available today.
Agents Future
Fully autonomous — infers intent, generates workflows, completes jobs end-to-end. Emerging now.

Intellia makes it possible to embed all three layers into LearningSite — without rebuilding the platform.
